I might have a soft spot for damaged characters, it seems. I love character studies of women dealing with family trauma, crippling loneliness, and seemingly irredeemable character flaws. We just finished discussing our latest Staff Book Club pick, 'The Giver of Stars' by Jojo Moyes. Set in 1930's America, this novel tells the story of several members of the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. Driven by a variety of motives, the librarians overcome some very personal challenges to deliver books by horseback in their mountainous community.

The State Forest Nursery online store opens today for fall 2024 and spring 2025 seedling orders.Tree varieties include 23 species of native hardwoods, eight evergreen species and 15 smaller trees and shrubs. Prices range from $.80 to $1.20 per seedling. Seedlings are sold in three age classifications, and range in size from 10-30 inches depending on the species.

This weekend I read Willy Vlautin's latest novel 'The Horse.' It is a sorrowful yet inspiring homage to the pain that often precedes truly great song lyrics. It appeals to me as both a reader and a music lover. Ann Patchett provides this praise: "Willy Vlautin writes about people overlooked by society and overlooked by literature.
